FAQs
New to Salsa ? Want to know the basics ? Read on....
When can I start beginners classes ? Do I need to come along with a partner
? Ladies, do not be shy, it is normal in a Salsa club
such as MoTivation to ask a man to dance. He knows it means "can I have
this dance", nothing more. Romance does sometimes blossom on the salsa dance
floor, but please be clear, the environment
and people are very different from the night club scene.
You can start at any time of year or month, as our
Beginners class has the same content each week and so you stay in that class
until you feel that the basics are happening automatically.
Beware of moving up to the next level too early (the teachers can help you
assess progress). Remember that it takes a while so be
patient.
It will probably be 7 or 8 weeks before you move
up into the next class level, but everyone is an individual and it can
be quicker or slower than that. The teachers will also give you
as much free time as she / he can spare to coach you in a small group
or one to one, to ensure you are able to do all that is necessary
to move up a class.
Dance Studio, 24, Richfield Avenue (RG1 8EQ) - Fridays
The Beginners class (a mix of Absolute Beginners and some
people who have done a few hours to 10 - 20 hours of Salsa) starts at 8:30 and
and runs for one hour. The price for the class or the class and the
club is £7. We include the practice / social dancing that goes on till about 11.30 pm
in the fixed price as it is most important to practice. Also included in this price
is the Warm Up session at 8:00pm, making this package the most cost effective Salsa
Beginners package anywhere in the Thames Valley.
Why do so many people dance salsa
?
It is a great way to keep in shape, much
easier than slogging on a treadmill and above all it is terrific fun. And WOW,
the music is unbelievable - you cannot fail to
be MoTivated on to the dance floor, even if you are English.
No, but as there
is a universal shortage of male dancers, each lady should do her best to
encourage some men to join the classes. During the classes we frequently rotate
partners, so everyone gets a chance to learn from each other. This
rotating of partners also helps to break the ice, then after in the Salsa Disco
(more commonly referred to as "Club" it is quite natural to dance with your fellow class
members. But you should also ask (or accept an invitation to dance) from
more experienced Salsa dancers, you will learn more quickly this way. Most of
the more experienced dancers are still aware of how helpful it was to them to
have the chance to dance with someone who had mastered the basics and
some.
Class Format - Beginners
We do not offer a course of lessons,
you can join our regular Beginners class as often as you are available and
missing some does not mean you miss vital components. The class content for Beginners does not change, you will not miss anything, you
just need to stay in the Beginners a little longer. Please remember regular
classes and plenty of practice is the only way to progress, as it is
just like a baby learning
to walk - you must get up and keep trying AND
soon your brain and muscles become cordinated.
If you are new to Salsa, come along at 8:00 and join our
Warm Up Session (no extra charge) to learn
the footwork for up to 30 minutes and then the Beginners class starts
at 8:30pm where you learn about partner work till 9:30. The from
June 2007 is £7 for up to 90 minutes of tuition. Also we include
the practice on the dance floor during the Club session (9:30 to 11:30sh). The
practice session is most important, even if all you do is the basic footwork
patterns.
The Improvers / Intermediate
Class
In the Improvers / Intermediate class you will learn some
additional moves and turns. You should be fairly familiar with the CROSS
BODY LEAD and turns in both directions, before contemplating the Improvers
class.
What To
Wear
It is best to wear hard plastic or leather soled shoes,
trainers or any rubbery type sole are a real problem to progress.
Stilleto heels are best avoided until you have learned not to
step backwards (step on the spot instead). In respect of other aspects of
clothing, there are no rules. It is very relaxed and casual at MoTivation Salsa.
Clothing should allow plenty of movement and not have too much material or
dangly sleeves that could get in the way. Please do not wear bulky and
sharp jewellery on your hands.
How can I make progress ?
Is Alcohol Available ?
We have
a bar for social drinking. Salsa dance is not so easy unless you
are fairly sober, so generally not much is drunk. As a result there are few anti social problems
related to overuse of alcohol.
